Boarnwird

Boarnwird | The oldest parts date from around 1200, the nave from later in the 13th century.

Boarnwird | Traces of red paint have been found on the walls, which suggest they could at one point have been all red

Boarnwird | Their faces have disappeared, but we can still see nine men, possibly the disciples of Jesus, of which another three must have faded all together

Boazum

Boazum | The oldest part of this church is probably the eastern part with the choir that dates from the second half of he 12th century. The tower has probably been raised after it completion.

Boazum | The rigid style in which te figures are drawn and the way their garments wrinkle, suggest the paintings are early medieval

Boazum | Unique in Fryslân is the Majestas-Dominuspainting: Jesus as teacher of all the world. These kind of paintings are characterised by Jesus holding one hand up and the other hand holding the Book of Live. He is often surrounded - like here - by symbols of the four evangelists

Boazum | Unknown figures, possibly John the Baptist and Mary

Boazum | A bishop, probably St. Martin, the patron-saint of the church

Boazum | The decorations are in bright colours, as opposed to the murals, who may be older and have thus faded

Britsum

Britsum | From the outside the church doesn't look like the Mediëval church it is. As the ancient walls gave way under the weight of the roof, it was decided in the 19th century to build new walls all around the old church building.

Britsum | Once inside one is surrounded by the Dark Ages

Britsum | This probably depicts Jews, who were often portrayed wearing pointy hats. They carry spears and sticks, so it's either the crucifixion or the moment Jesus was taken captive in the Garden of Gethsemane.

Britsum | Often described as a vikingship, what it really is, is anyone's guess.

Britsum | Decorations

Britsum | Jesus, here on a throne, again surrounded by men wearing pointy hats. John the Baptist holds his hand over Jesus' head and it looks like Jesus tries to put his foot in the water. A red Byzanthian-styled pillar is visible onthe right.
