The viking marketplaces of Kaupang is located northeast of Larvik at the Vikfjord, about 140 km south of Oslo. These days there is not a lot to be seen. Although it is obvious that the marketplace was located near the water of the Vikfjord, the situation in the 8th and 9th C. was nothing like it is today, as the seelevel was about fout meters higher than today.

All in all and certainly compared to the Ribe and Hedeby, with their (open-air) museums, the Norwegians seem to be less keen on their viking-history than their counterparts. |
