Early viking trading placesThe Northmen (aka. the vikings) and the Frisians were trading partners as well as enemies. The fearless vikings have become part of popular culture, the early trading places in Scandinavia are hardly known outside the field of archeology.
I have visited them all: Ribe (Denmark), Birka (Sweden), Hedeby (Denmark, modern day Germany) and Dorestad (Frisia, modern day Netherlands) and Kaupang (Norway). |

LocationsThis map shows the locations of the four trading places of the Northmen (Kaupang, Birka, Ribe and Hedeby) and the Frisian town of Dorestad.
